INFORMATION
My work is rooted in the landscape, but absorbed sensory information and topographical detail serve only as a starting point for each piece.
As each work unfolds and the reworked surface becomes more complex,
I find I have become more concerned with how I feel about it, more concerned with structure, tension, expression and mark making, in juxtapositions of colour and how it describes space and reflects mood, and as such each piece becomes defined more by internal experience and reality. The work now hovers somewhere in the area between abstraction and representation. With the use of rollers, brushes, knives and rags to apply paint, random drips and chance marks all work alongside considered decisions and measured placement of marks to create the finished surface. I hope to create paintings which are, through the build up of mixed media layers and the hidden or fragile parts of the surface, in themselves studies of the passing of time, but also rich, inviting and contemplative images.
Printmaking processes are a fantastic way of structuring and pacing your thoughts, and I am obsessed with collagraphs because it is a process which requires this yet allows a more painterly approach. Collagraph textures and inking possibilities are wonderful with really rich, tactile and serendipitous prints being achieved, which have a real connection for me with my intuitive responses to the physical world.
